One of four central major works created for a show featuring collaborative concepts between myself and Anthony the Poet in San Antonio, TX, this was one of his ideas of how to combine popular traditional and celebratory foods with existential angst.
Here we see the butcher and the cook master next to the buried barbacoa. Barbacoa generally involves slow-cooking meats or whole sheep, whole cows, whole beef heads, or whole goats in a hole dug in the ground. The idea here of course being that this buried mean, smoldering and cooking under the surface is analogous to the original sin and oedipal sexual guild we are supposedly saddle with as humans.
