It rhymes in Spanish. My Mexican American and San Antonio dialect of Spanish speaking friend collaborated on this piece with me. He helped with many of the titles in this series both English and Spanish. A series of works that center on the combination of delicious and often times celebratory traditional foods and existential angst that we are always striving to keep at bay. Food and tradition and celebration all help distract us, console us, compensate us for a life of pain, suffering, and misery.
Combining fear with menudo, I embodied the feel of primordial fear seen in a screaming skeleton. I work in the menudo by having them holding spoons, ready to partake and enjoy but being repulsed and afraid of the comically literal portrayal of the pig foot that is often served in this soup, emerging out of the bowl like a zombie from the grave.
