Worry has a remarkable ability to feed itself. One thought becomes another, which becomes another, until you’ve worried about the original problem, every possible consequence, and several disasters that haven’t happened yet. Why don’t we replace the whole troublesome mess with a few scoops of ice cream?

If you’re going to lose your mind, you might as well have dessert.

Some regrets are foreseeable. That doesn’t necessarily stop us.

There are foods we know we’ll pay for later, but sometimes the promise of potatoes covered in bubbling cheese outweighs concern over future suffering.

Regret Au Gratin captures that unfortunate moment when pleasure gives way to consequence. Martin Luther himself attributed some of his intestinal troubles to the work of demons. Here they return to torment another poor soul who probably knew better than to eat all that cheese.

No regrets. Until there are.

It probably won’t fix anything. But it is a Frito pie.

This little gummi bear confronts some of life’s more persistent questions: Where am I? How did I get here? What am I for? And why am I covered in chamoy?

Tarot cards. Lucky coins. Tea leaves. Fortune tellers. Horoscopes. We don’t necessarily expect them to predict the future—we just hope they’ll make uncertainty a little easier to live with.

Iced Uncertain Tea imagines that search for certainty with an oversized Bill Miller iced tea—a San Antonio favorite—because the refreshment of sweet tea on a sweltering Texas day is one thing that’s never in doubt.

Raspas y Tristezas or "snow cones and sorrows" is a painting about the highs and lows of being a child. The joy of a snow cone and the tragic loss when it is dropped...and then there is the bees.

Childhood has a remarkable way of turning ordinary moments into emotional extremes. A snow cone is pure joy. Until it’s dropped. Then the world is briefly over. And somewhere nearby, there are always bees waiting to complicate things.

Raspas y Tristezas (“Snow Cones and Sorrows”) grew out of conversations with Anthony the Poet about growing up in San Antonio. He introduced me to the neighborhood raspa man, along with the strangely vivid memories—both wonderful and tragic—that could be attached to something as simple as flavored ice.

Somewhere along the way, ordinary decisions become strangely loaded. A bowl of pretzels. Another beer. Dessert. Just one handful.

The painting exaggerates that familiar calculation into a moment of paralysis, where every snack feels like a test and every indulgence carries the faint echo of future consequences.
